Excellent all around pack.
This pack has performed good. It works for an overnighter in the woods with just the right amount of space for someone who is weight conscious. I can fit my wool blanket inside as a back pad and still have enough room inside for a Eureka bivy tent, dry bag with one change of light clothing, dry bag with food/small cook set, a book, 50 rds of ammo and a small possibles bag. On the outside I attach my sleeping pad to the leather flap straps and off to the woods I go. The Duluth#51 Utility is an outstanding buy. Review by Dan Dan (Posted on 9/6/2016)
great for day trips

18 months later - still my favorite pack
Cheers to the Duluth folks! I spent some talking with them - I'm 6'4" tall and barrel chested - and we added some extra length on my web straps and I also knew I wanted a grab handle so we added that too.

This pack has been to ball games, bike rides, ATV and Dirt Bike rides, and even on my Harley. It's been on countless canoe trips and is the first pack hanging by the door that I grab for anything.

I keep a seat cushion wrapped in the pack liner bag in the pack - it serves as a barrier to the back on sharp objects and gives the bag some shape too when it's not loaded full - as it's often not.

I use a variety of smaller bags in a bag concept - fire kit, personal survival kit, urban get around kit, etc...and throw in whatever smaller bags compliment that days activity.

I've tried other bags and I keep coming back to the simplicity of this bag. It's been dumped in rivers and streams - it's been covered in mud and probably a little blood - it never fails to clean up simply and after a day of hanging to dry looks almost like new.

I treated my straps and the round Duluth logo patch immediately and keep them treated - they get much darker but I like that and they are soft as butter all the time and probably will never crack if I keep them treated.

Great pack - we have some old Duluth packs from the 30's and 40's in our family...I imagine this one will be passed on well after I am gone too.

Very nice bag, well-built and the perfect size. I only regret not getting d-rings sewn on to hold a bed roll. Review by Augie (Posted on 3/9/2013)
Totally awesome!!!
This is the best looking bag I've ever had. It's so well put together and you can tell right away that you will have it forever. I am totally impressed. Cheers to American Made!!! Review by Coolbreeze (Posted on 5/21/2012)
Stands up over time
I bought the 51 about twenty years ago and added heavier canvas, a double bottom and heavier all leather straps and a buckle attachment for a tumpline. I am a professional forest worker and carry the pack every day I am outside...which is nearly every day spring-summer-fall. The back flap is totally sun-bleached and the leather is now supple with long use. I depend on the best pack and the best boots I can get....regardless of price. If I really thought that there was something "better" out there, I would have it. Younger people laugh at it, as it lacks the "technical" look of "todays" gear. I am quiet and let them think what they want. Live and learn. Review by Natty (Posted on 6/19/2011)
i'm in love
i just received my #51 utility pack and i am in love. it is much bigger than i expected which was a pleasant surprise. i am really excited to try it out! Review by zaftig (Posted on 1/26/2011)
I decided to get the #60 instead of the #51 and when I got the bag in the mail it was quite large, but perfect to carry all of my hunting stuff. I can put in all the things that I need for a days worth of hunting comfortably and still have room for extra layers and a Thermos. This bag is amazing, I plan on getting the #51 for day hikes. The quality is unmatched. Review by Gregory (Posted on 12/8/2010)
it goes everywhere
the #51 is an all purpose, go everywhere pack. Roomy enough for everything you need for a day out and about. The flap and strap closure gives the need space for that last extra thing. We like this pack so much that we have given it away to visiting Guests during exchange weekends. Review by stephanie (Posted on 7/19/2010)
Great Economical Pack
I purchased this pack for my son as his first Duluth Pack. It is a great size for the Jr. High School age. Fits everything for a long weekend camping to sleepovers with friends. Expands with the top flap and leather strapping system and allows him to stuff everything he needs and would want to carry. Great original design and economical.
